Old Town Chinatown, 1 mile from Downtown Portland, is the oldest neighborhood in Portland and the official Chinatown. Visitors will know they are entering the area through the intricately decorated 1986 Chinatown Gateway done in paifang, a traditional Chinese architectural style. The gateway reminds those entering the area of the Chinese immigrants in who traveled to the West Coast and worked any labor jobs they could find to send money back to their families. By the waterfront, the Japanese American Historical Plaza recognizes the Japanese immigrants who arrived in the early 20th century, also denoting this location as the Japantown Historic District. Old Town Chinatown is rich in history and filled with trendy eateries and retail locations.
